More than 25,000 people in Lincoln do not have insurance: many of those who do not have insurance do not have the financial resources to pay for increasing co-pays, appointments or for on-going medications. Some of Lincoln’s refugee population do not speak English or understand the healthcare system. Other people are unaware of the community resources available or how to access them.
Clinic with a Heart volunteers have provided many community residents FREE urgent medical care. Services are provided by volunteers throughout the community and from local churches. Clinic with a Heart is staffed by medical and non-medical volunteers. Volunteer positions include: physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, chiropractors, dentists, physical therapists, pharmacists, and lab technicians, clerical/ administration and clinic night support. Interpreters are provided for the patients who are better able to communicate in languages other than English. Interpreters have been utilized for more than 14 different languages.
Medications are provided either at Clinic with a Heart through their in-house pharmacy or the patient is given a script to Wal-Mart for filling. On occasion, if patients require further treatment; they are referred to physicians who provide the treatment at no cost or at a reduced rate. Personal care items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo and bath soap are donated by organizations throughout the community and are given to each patient during clinic to aid in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
From the first clinic night, when 19 people received care, Clinic with a Heart volunteers continue to "have a heart to serve others." On average 35 to 40 patients are cared for during the hour and a half the clinic is open for urgent medical care. As the need for healthcare among low income and refugee populations increase, we continually look for volunteers and community financial supporters to help us in meeting the medical needs of our community friends.
